Tuneage Tutelage Music Review Friday

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Friday, August 08, 2008

What a finale of So You Think You Can Dance!...This is my first season watching it and I did enjoy it greatly.

Congrats to the winner, Joshua...I was a Twitch guy personally and even voted the last few weeks. But Joshua is an incredible talent...totally untrained, yet he did the 'structured dances' so well.

I can't really talk about this stuff, but you know who can?!?!?!?!?!

That's right...head over to TRAVIS' and get the educated rundown of the finale...

So, recently I was contacted by a PR firm that represents a ton of musical artists. These are not arena type artists, but people and bands trying to make it on the circuit.

Just about everyday I get an email with a new artist featured. I then go and listen to their music and see what they are all about. We will be booking a couple of these people for the Radio Happy Hour in the coming months, but I thought I would give you, my wonderful guests, the opportunity to perhaps find a new favorite or two. I have found some artists that I really enjoy. Some not so much.

Today I am going to introduce you to some of these artists, even those that don't make me get my groove-thing on, because your musical tastes might just be different than mine.

Figured this was good for a Friday so all y'all have the weekend to come back and explore these artists...and give you a chance to rate them. Let's be fair and honest now...

Also, let me know if you like this feature and I will continue to share.

Neal is from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Take one shot of David Bowie, a shot of Billy Joel, a splash of John Lennon, pour into the glass and stir with one ice cube and you can imagine what you will get listening to Neal Fox.

This is "Is Anybody Home" which is strongly influenced by Bowie, but there are times when it sounds like John has added vocals. It is a tad eerie to be honest...

"A Cold Day Is Coming" let's you hear the Billy Joel/Bruce Springsteen influence. I do like his lyrics on this one...

"What The Hell Were You Thinking?" A little Marc Bolen/Warren Zevon/Joe Walsh vibe on this one...

You can learn more about Neal Fox on his website HERE or on his myspace page HERE.

Frontman Chris Snyder, bassist Previn Warren and drummer Joe Stroll are from New York City. They list their influences as U2, The Mars Volta, Radiohead, The Dismemberment Plan and Muse.

Their website can be found HERE and their myspace is HERE (there is more music there). They only had one song available for preview. It is called "The Architect" Not something that rocked my boat. I didn't hate it, so I guess I would say I needed to hear more...

She also hails from New York and lists her influences as Toby Lightman, Michelle Branch, Alicia Keys and Ella Fitzgerald...now THOSE are some influences!

You can hear more music and find out more about Josephine - just check out her myspace page HERE.

First is "Unfinished Life"...

Next is something a little different, "Stronger"...I like this one best out of her three.

And finally, "I Think Of You"...

19 Of Your Sparks

  1. have a wonderful weekend bond!

    smiles, bee

  2. Bond Says:
  3. BEE: You also

  4. DrillerAA Says:
  5. Pretty good music sir.
You're right about Neal Fox, some of his vocals sound like Lennon.
The States are a little predictable.
Josephine is pretty good. The first number has a little bluegrass flavor vocally. I like the second number as well.
But then, I'm older than dirt and the hearing isn't what it used to be, so I probably shouldn't be commenting on this stuff.
    Have a great week-end.

  6. RWA Says:
  7. What a great opportunity, having access to new music like that. I am a bit jealous.

Unfortunately, none of these three really got my attention. I would agree that "Stronger" is the best of the three Josephine songs you linked.

  8. Anndi Says:
  9. I'd rather focus on one new artist at a time and actually give them more than a fleeting listen. A little respect for their craft if you will.

I couldn't get all of the songs for Neal to load and that's too bad because I have actually heard of him before and I like him.

The States have something... I'll listen to more.

Josephine, um, not so much. I couldn't get past the first 30 seconds of each song. Sorry.

  10. Bond Says:
  11. DRILLERAA: No matter how old or young we are ...we all get to comment Sir...thanks for your thoughts

RWA: Thanks for chiming in...It is kind of cool...I am enjoying it

ANNDI: Neal is fixed...Maybe three is too many...will rethink that
Thanks for your thoughts...you mean even when she was singing French???

  12. Neal Fox rocks. I'll be back to check out the rest...

  13. Starrlight Says:
  14. Thanks for sharing those Bond! You tell your PR firm to call me if they want more ears. I love unearthing little knowns =)

  15. Jay Says:
  16. Very cool. I'm a music fan, but maybe not on the level of some people who almost live it for it. But, I do love to check out new acts.

  17. BeckEye Says:
  18. Ahhh....blogging on the down low at work today so I can't listen to the songs. I still don't have my home computer hooked up, but hope to do that this weekend.

I definitely have to check out Travis's SYTYCD review. I love that show. I was a big Mark fan, who was sadly booted last week.

  19. jennifer Says:
  20. Hopefully I can come back tonight and give them a listen - after my kiddos have gone to bed and are not NEEDING so much. It is a cliche but whoever coined the phrase "Motherhood is like being pecked to death by a chicken" was right on the money!

    Until later....

  21. Bond Says:
  22. BUD: He does have an infectious sound

STARR: You have to do reviews for them...

    JAY: Thanks...

BECKEYE: Hopefully you will get set up this weekend...

JENNIFER: Let's hope when you are the one NEEDING they will care for you.

  23. katherine. Says:
  24. I'm en route trainin' to tracy...I'll listen later...

maybe RHH can book Jackie Greene.... he is gonna be something big.... in my not-so-hymble opinion...

  25. Travis Says:
  26. I like the feature, but maybe three is too many. How about two at a time, and maybe contrasting styles?

Thanks for sharing the music. And thanks for the shout out too!

  27. the teach Says:
  28. Thanks Vinny, for sharing these talented young people! I wish them luck!

  29. Starrlight Says:
  30. Me?! Forced to give an opinion? I don't know if I could.......

    Quit Laughing :P

  31. cathy Says:
  32. I liked "The States" best but I could see the others have talent.
    Good luck to them all.

  33. Tug Says:
  34. Finally made it by to listen, and I really liked them all - only time will tell if I like them enough to download I guess.

Hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

  35. TopChamp Says:
  36. Hmm... The first one confused me. I can't work out what he's trying to do and wasn't overjoyed by any of it. But I'm reserving judgement.

The band - The States. Like it. Want to hear more of it. Can't believe you posted three tunes for the others but not this one.

That last girl - It's ok. Don't particularly want to hear it again ever.
