Peace, Sunrise

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Thursday, October 29, 2009

Need ideas for what to say on your Peace Glob? Personally, I think words should come from the heart..but I have used lyrics - sometimes the words are already there...How about three of my favorites -

“There is no way to peace, peace is the way.”
---A. J. Muste(Pacifist and Prophet)

“Peace is not something you wish for; It's something you make, Something you do, Something you are, And something you give away.”
---Robert Fulghum

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”
---Jimi Hendrix

Yesterday in comments PHFRANKIE BONDO of "Phfrank's Place" asked about 'the pyramid' and I was glad, as I purposely selected that shot to see if anyone would ask.

That is...The Pyramid...here in Memphis. It is a 20,142-seat arena built in 1991 and originally owned and operated by the city of Memphis and Shelby County, in which Memphis is located.

It was inspired by the cities namesake in Egypt. It is 321 feet (98m, about 32 stories) tall and has base sides of 591 ft; it is the sixth largest pyramid in the world behind the Great Pyramid of Giza (456 ft), Khafre's Pyramid (448 ft), Luxor Hotel (348 ft), the Red Pyramid (341 ft) and the Bent Pyramid (332 ft), both in Dahshur. It is also slightly (about 16 feet) taller than the Statue of Liberty. A statue of Ramesses the Great stands in front of the pyramid.

It was the home of the University of Memphis basketball team and also the NBA Memphis Grizzlies. It has not been used for sporting events since 2004. Both teams moved when they built the FedEx Forum and The Pyramid basically became extinct. The last concert was Bob Segar in 2007.

The city has tried to sell the space and thought they had sold it to Bass Pro Shops about a year and a half ago, but that fell through. There has been talk by some developers to turn it into the center of an amusement park but nothing has come from that.

The web site for the Pyramid is no longer functioning - and why should it be?

Basic facts can be found over at wiki HERE

  6. Nice Yankee logo. They'll get it back tonight. I know because today we have the M&M jar on the right side of the table instead of the left. My bad for that yesterday. Sorry!

Great sunrise photos! And I knew some of those facts about The Pyramid arena. It's a shame it isn't being used anymore.

  7. Bond Says:
  8. MICKEY-T: Thanks

DANA: It was beautiful to watch in person...YES Baseball is still going on!

TRAVIS: I loved it when i saw it...Thanks about the jar...and Nancy has said she would sit more tonight...last night she was dealing with her youngest...I explained that 7 more days and my attitude for the next 4 months depends on this! LOL

It is a shame that building is sitting there

  9. Jay Says:
  10. It's really amazing how quickly The Pyramid was abandoned. It's not that old and 20,000 seats is a pretty big arena. There really doesn't seem to be any explanation as to why either. Was there something about the place that made it a bad place for concerts or basketball? Strange.

  11. Bond Says:
  12. JAY: Fed ex said we will build a beautiful arena right down the block from Beale Street and the Grizzlies and the Tigers said - we are there...and the location is much better than the Pyramid for concert goers...

    It is sad though

  13. 1) the pyramid is too cool for school. My suggestion is they turn it into a medicinal marijuana dispensary.

    2)loooooves me some unfolding sunrise!

    3)Yankees? Bwahahahahahahahaha!

  14. I'm a Yankee fan, Vinny... They do need this one tonight. Bad luck if the let the Phillies get two up on them. :)

  15. Bond Says:
  16. PHFRANKIE: That sounds like a plan to me...you be nice about my Yankees or we will go to war Sir!

    MARY: They win tonight

  17. katherine. Says:

  21. TopChamp Says:
  22. How beautiful - sunrise!

I should go to bed or I'll miss ours tomorrow...

  23. I knew that the Tigers and the Grizzlies no longer played at The Pyramid, but I had no idea that it was just sitting there empty.

Fantastic pictures. I am always amazed at how quickly the sky changes at sunrise. By the time you click the shutter on your camera, it's time to take another picture.

  24. amynoroom Says:
