AH the wonderful world of the internet...

Sparks Of Insanity By Vinny "Bond" Marini Wednesday, February 23, 2011

So, Monday night...I am just about to go live for Music On The Couch and I notice I lost internet connection and my call to my switchboard has been dropped by SKYPE. I reset SKYPE and Firefox and it comes back up. I see my first guest is there and I go to bring him into the 'green room'...but nothing happens.

I turn around and my modem seems to be fine, as does my wireless router. I decide to reset the router and unplug it and disconnect from the modem. Wait 60 seconds - do you know how long 60 seconds is when you are sending out dead-air to people hoping to listen to your show? It take 2,000,000,000,000 seconds, that is how long it is! - and go to plug the router in again. And....NOTHING! No lights, nothing.

What to do? Well i immediately decide to hard-wire the Mac into the internet and grab a CAD 5 cable and get it all set up.

OK, I am on the air...but my guest has left! I turned to a friend in the chat room and ask him to call the guest, Keith Sykes, and ask him to call back in.

By the time it all gets taken care of, I lost about 20 minutes of time with Mr. Sykes.

I will have him back soon, as he has another album about to drop...an album of blues songs!

The rest of the show went pretty well. A full chat room, many new-comers who got to hear, what was arguably the worst show (from a technical standpoint) so far. Some problems with my sound (time for a real microphone me thinks, but no problems with both guests.

Keith was a gem and understood. My second guest, Jim Chilson from the Ten Foot Polecats got an almost error free (except for the last 5 minutes when my audio dropped!) time on The Couch.

After the show ended, I went in and edited out all the dead air at the beginning and fixed what was lost at the end...so the show, a tad short by comparison, is in archives and ready for y'all to hear.

All that said, I hope you check out the show and let the opening audio problems pass you by...

  2. Sorry about the technical problems, but I love the test pattern. Brings back fond memories from my childhood, getting up early on a Saturday morning and waiting for the local TV station to sign on and the cartoons to start.

  6. Satilite Technology: Something that's bound to fail. We should all be ready at any minute.

  8. These things are gonna happen from time to time. Usually it's BTR acting up. I use Google Talk to call in and I know it's garbled every once in a while. But on Skype we get an echo from Matt-Man even though he's on a regular phone. I'm pretty sure it's Skype causing it somehow though.

  9. Ouch. That's not good. Did you figure out what the problem was with your wireless router?

  10. DRILLER: That is why I selected it...totally had the same memories

    MICKEYT: Very true Sir...

JAY: This was my wireless router, which I figured out what was the problem and fixed last night

SOUTHERN: Yeah, operator error this time!

  12. By the time I get a stuff-free Monday, DWTS will be back and I'll have to keep checking in on the archived shows.

It just might be time to subscribe via iTunes.
